Who are we ?

Luísa Coheur

Luísa Coheur graduated in Applied Mathematics and Computation from Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), Lisbon and received a PhD degree with a syntactic/semantic interface based on hierarchically organized rules, from both IST and Université Blaise-Pascal, in France. She is a proud member of Spoken Language Systems Lab (L²F) since its creation. Her current research interests are Question Answering and Machine Translation. She is the PI of the PT-STAR project - Speech Translation Advanced Research to and from Portuguese, and she is also involved in the project FalaComigo.

She is a part time writer and she loves reading, painting, writing and starting diets. She loves to call "Ana Cristina" to her student "Ana Cristina".

Ana Cristina Mendes

Ana Cristina Mendes graduated in Information Systems and Computer Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), Technical University of Lisbon, Portugal. In 2006, she was introduced to the L²F group and, in particular, to Luísa Coheur, her MSc advisor. Later, in 2007, she received the MSc degree from IST, her thesis being focused on the development of a Question-Answering system for Portuguese: QA@L²F. In the same year, she became a member of the Tecnovoz project, in which she belonged to the dialogue systems development team. In 2008, she enrolled in a Ph.D. program, again under the advisory of Luísa Coheur, within the field of interactive question-answering. Her main research interests are Question-Answering.

Ana Cristina likes reading, traveling and nonsense humor. She does not like to be called "Ana Cristina".

Sérgio Curto

Sérgio Curto graduated in Information Systems and Computer Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico, Technical University of Lisbon. In 2010 he received the MSc degree from IST, his thesis being focused on the development of Question Generation systems for both Portuguese and English, with Luísa Coheur as MSc advisor. Currently he is working in the FalaComigo project. The goal is to improve the developed systems, aiming to integrate them with dialog systems.

Sérgio is also interested in: music, cinema, web-comics, bike ridding, swimming and video-games.

Ricardo Pires

Ricardo Pires is a student of Information Systems and Computer Engineering in Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), Technical University of Lisbon. He is currently finishing his master degree. In 2009 he was introduced to Luísa Coheur as he searched for a master thesis in the QA area. One year after, he began working on a thesis under the supervision of Luísa Coheur, which main topics are Questions Classification and Query Expansion.

Ricardo has other interests besides QA, such as music, sports, cinema and videogames.

André Gonçalves

André Gonçalves is a student of Information Systems and Computer Engineering in Instituto Superior Técnico, Technical University of Lisbon. He is currently finishing his master degree. He met Prof. Luisa Coheur while taking the Natural Language course in 2009, and since then, he decided to make its thesis on the Natural Language Processing field, under her supervision. His thesis deals with improving the Answer Extraction module and the Evaluation Framework of Just.Ask.

André has many hobbies: music, movies (he used to work on a popular movie site), writing, chocolate, psychology and everything humorous, and is addicted to information.

Joana Ribeiro

Joana Ribeiro is an undergraduate student of Applied Mathematics and Computation at in Instituto Superior Técnico, Technical University of Lisbon.

She was introduced to Professor Luisa Coheur and to the L2F group, in 2010, when she had just discovered the Natural Language Processing area and she is now working in QA under the supervision of Professor Luisa Coheur.

Joana also likes travelling, reading, writing, postcrossing, and playing drums.

Pedro Fialho

Pedro Fialho has recently finished his Master thesis at University of Évora with logical QA applied to medical ontologies as thesis subject and he's now enrolled in the NICE PhD program in Computer Science. His research interests also include speech technologies, logic programming, linguistics and NLP, mostly with AI as main target. He's a proud member of the Spoken Language Systems Lab (L²F) since 2011, when he was introduced to Luísa Coheur and the QA@L2F team.

Pedro also likes music, bicycle rides and occasional guitar playing.

Hugo Rodrigues

Hugo Rodrigues earned his Bachelor degree in 2010 and his Masters degree in 2012, both in Information Systems and Computer Engineering, from Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), Lisbon. He joined the L²F in 2010, as a grant holder, staying at L²F after being enrolled in the Dual PhD Program CMU-Portugal, in 2012.

Hugo loves to play Magic and board games, sports and other normal hobbies.
